Madison Meets Shaylee

Madi was introduced to her new baby sister today...and she loved her!

Shaylee Elsie Rogers

Shaylee was born on December 14, 2008 at 5:33 a.m. She weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce and was 20 1/2 inches long. Alicia was in labor for about nine hours. Not too shabby.

At the Hospital...Here comes Shaylee!

Well, here we are, just hanging out at the hospital waiting for the arrival of our little Shaylee...Alicia and I did some deep cleaning today in preparation for this very event which could probably be a big credit to the labor, and now here we are. Alicia's water broke at about 8:45 tonight and now were just waiting. She should be here some time tonight...

Madison vs. Shaylee

So I was very curious to see how much I have grown with this pregnancy compared to my pregnancy with Madison. I had a picture taken of me when I was about 36 weeks along with Madison. So I had Mark take a picture of me last week which was when I was about 36 weeks along with Shaylee.

I didn't realize I was bigger this time than last time because I have gained less weight. I never believed my Mom when she told me you forget what things were like during previous pregnancies but now I guess I do.

Another Update on Shaylee

Just a quick update...we had another ultrasound yesterday and it was determined that Shaylee is growing on schedule. In fact she has nearly caught up to where she needs to be at this point. The ultrasound estimates her weight at 5 pounds 14 ounces, almost what Madison weighed at birth. So good news on the homefront...we don't have to go to a specialist.

Politics Again...

For as much as I hate politics, I find it a good time to comment on what is going on right now with this whole proposition 8 issue. I find it quite ironic and funny that when the "democratic process" doesn't work for some then there has to be a retaliation on someone. In this case its the Mormons. The part i find amusing is that, yes, the church did get involved, but i didn't think that there was that big of a Mormon population in California. But it's the Mormons who passed the vote. Hmmmmmm. First let’s clarify: as of 2006 there were 761,716 Mormons in California (5.5 million total in the US) and over 54 million people voted yes on this. Secondly, No against prop 8 raised more money by the end than did Yes on prop 8 according to the San Jose Mercury News, including six figure donations from several celebrities and the co-founders of Google. Yup...sure sounds like we Mormons swayed the vote.
And now temples are being sent envelopes with white powder, people entering the temple grounds in L.A. are being flipped-off and having profanities yelled at them, and all for what, again? Now I'm starting to forget because this is turning into hate crimes against a religion.
Today the First Presidency released yet another statement calling for civility. "Places of worship have been targeted by opponents of Proposition 8 with demonstrations and, in some cases, vandalism. People of faith have been intimidated for simply exercising their democratic rights."
The statement also says, "The Church is keenly aware of the differences of opinion on this difficult and sensitive matter" and urges people to respect opposing opinions and calls for civility for from those on both sides of the issues. "Attacks on churches and intimidation of people of faith have no place in civil discourse over controversial issues. People of faith have a democratic right to express their views in the public square without fear of reprisal. Efforts to force citizens out of public discussion should be deplored by people of goodwill everywhere."
Is this a sign of the times, or what?

The Utes Do It Again

You gotta give props to the 8th ranked team in all the land...beating 12th ranked TCU in a game that all of the BYU fans thought Utah would lose (like them). Well, there's not much you can say now, except that Utah is clearly the best team in the MWC (thanks to our kicking game...something TCU should invest in).

On A Cold Dark Night...This Little Piggy Still Went Out

In a land where TRUNK-or-treat has become the popular go to for those questing to find a limitless supply of sugar and fun, it is hard to find a good place for that good ol-fashioned door-to-door (work for the goods) trick-or-treating. This year the search took us up to Pleasant Grove where Aaron and Kristi's neighborhood still awaited the coming of the little beasts and monsters at their homes instead of from the back of their car in some church parking lot. Madison got all dressed up without the foreknowledge of what was to come.

As a little pig, Madi met up with her cousins Avery and Mckenna, and Jack (Aaron and Kristi's new puppy), Kristi, and Gill. We all took to the streets, in search of the Sweet goodness that Halloween is known to provide. Still, Madison was not too sure of what was going on...until we got to the first house. Upon knocking on the door, hearing Avery and Mckenna shout "trick-or-treat," and receiving the latter, she got super excited. It took a few houses for her to catch on, but when she realized how bounteous the payout was she got very enthusiastic about going from house to house in search of more candy. By the end of the first street she was running to the door and yelling "candy treat!" as soon as the door would open.

As she started to tire out and slow down, Gill became her personal transportation device, carrying her from door to door. Madison sure loved getting more candy with less work! All-in-all, Madison ended up tick-or-treating for about 3 hours and took home about half of a shopping bag full of treats. The sheer volume of candy was not just from trick-or-treating houses alone, but due to the fact that she was dressed as a pig, many people thought that she needed more candy, and she was more than obliged to accept! Overall it was a very fun and tiring Halloween and Madison definetly has a sugar supply to last for months...

Update on Shaylee

So we went to the doctor today for an ultrasound to see if Shaylee has stopped growing like Madison did. Alicia is now about 32 weeks and to this point has been measuring just right. Today's ultrasound was just measurements and not much of the fun stuff, but it was still fun to see Shaylee moving around. We could see her kicking her little legs for a bit which was really fun. Shaylee is now up to approximately 3 1/2 pounds and seems to be developing well for the most part. There is a little tiny concern still that she may stop growing, as her abdomen is about two weeks behind (her head is just right) in development. Madison was the same way and they say it is not unusual for this to happen. However they are probably going to order another ultrasound in a couple weeks or so to see if Shaylee gets any further behind in her development so they can decide what to do from there. With Madison, she stopped growing towards the end of the pregnancy due to a smaller than normal umbilical cord, which in some cases can be dangerous to the baby. So with Shaylee they want to monitor her more closely to make sure she doesn't stay in the womb too long (if necessary). So all in all, what did we learn from this ultrasound? Not much, just more mullah to pay out in doctors bills for all these ultrasounds!

I don't know but maybe an independent candidate should win this election. Does anyone miss Mitt Romney right about now? (I wonder what McCain is thinking in this picture...)

I think Madi may like eating the batter more than the actual pancakes, but hey, at least she's eating them, right? She also apparently enjoys eating the powder mix off of the counter...without her hands (don't we all).
